Yesterday was a historic day for Taranto. Following an investment of just over €80 million, the new Erasmo Iacovone Stadium opened its doors to the club’s fans for the first time, marking the Puglian side’s first home game at the new ground. It is almost surreal to see a stadium of this scale, with such contemporary architecture, being used by a team currently playing in Eccellenza. That is precisely why the hope is that Taranto can quickly climb the divisions and give this stadium the stage it deserves.

We stepped inside the stadium through the lens of Luigi Colella, who captured the club’s first home game in black and white: on one side, the emotion of the fans; on the other, the lines, volumes and details of a modern piece of architecture that we are still not used to seeing when it comes to Italian stadiums. The opening of Taranto’s new stadium is therefore an important milestone not only for the city and the club, but also for the way we imagine the Italian stadiums of the future. A project that, hopefully, can soon become an example for other cities to follow.
