Lorenzo Musetti with the most beautiful defeat of the US Open Don’t get us wrong, we’re talking about his Bottega Veneta look worn against Jannik Sinner
In a New York animated by the emotions of the US Open, during the night Jannik Sinner sportingly outclassed Lorenzo Musetti, defeating him in straight sets. What was the very first all-Italian derby in the quarterfinals of the US Open – and which secured Sinner a spot in the semifinals – was also, in a sense, the very first fashion derby in tennis. Gucci (Sinner) on one side, Bottega Veneta (Musetti) on the other. Since Wimbledon 2023, Sinner has made us accustomed to his spectacular court entrances with a Gucci bag on his shoulder, while on the other side Musetti has started showing up, beginning with this year’s Wimbledon edition, with a Bottega Veneta jacket. A natural choice after his appointment as brand ambassador: indeed, Sinner and Musetti are respectively the first Italian athletes to become ambassadors for Gucci and Bottega Veneta, and their talent suggests they will remain so for a long time.
A top-10 matchup for the last semifinal spot.

Under the creative direction of Louise Trotter, Bottega Veneta had already included Musetti in its debut campaign, and at Wimbledon the tennis player took to the court against Nikoloz Basilashvili in an all-white outfit featuring the iconic intrecciato, the maison’s recognizable symbol and perfectly aligned with the rules of the London tournament. But while Wimbledon imposes rigor and all-white attire, the US Open – free from strict dress codes – allows freedom. And so, Bottega Veneta chose a black jacket for Musetti, perfectly matched with the ASICS kit (shirt, shorts, wristbands, shoes, and even socks). Online, many pointed out his Dark Knight look.
That’s why, in our view, Lorenzo Musetti’s loss to Jannik Sinner on the Arthur Ashe Stadium hard court will remain one of the sweetest defeats in the recent history of Italian tennis.
