Football Manager 27 is still the best way to kill time And this is what we liked
Every new football season brings with it a feeling that is difficult to explain to anyone who has never experienced it. It is that desire to start over, to imagine what might happen in the months ahead and, above all, to convince yourself that things will be different this time. It applies to fans just as much as to those sitting in front of their computer, ready to start another Football Manager career. Because, ultimately, it doesn't matter how many times you've taken a team from Serie C all the way to the Champions League: every new save represents an opportunity, a project waiting to be written.
It's the perfect ritual for anyone looking to unwind and immerse themselves in a whole new world, where they can shape the destiny of their favourite team by combining economics, strategy and management. It's something I never want to give up, no matter how old I get. It gives me a sense of mental freedom and creativity that I find incredibly rewarding, especially after a long day at work, but not exclusively.
What's New in Football Manager 27?
This is precisely the feeling at the heart of Football Manager 27, the latest instalment in the Sports Interactive series, which we had the chance to try out ahead of its release. An edition that aims to make managing your team more intuitive, without sacrificing the depth that has turned Football Manager into something far more complex than just another football video game. The first difference is immediately noticeable in the interface, which features an improved layout and more intuitive navigation. In a game where every day revolves around meetings, training sessions, analysis, transfers and match preparation, being able to find your way through the wealth of information available is no minor detail. On the contrary, it is an essential part of the experience. FM27 addresses precisely this aspect, making it easier to access different sections and reducing the interruptions that can disrupt the flow of a career.
The improvements made every year are truly outstanding. The FM27 team knows how to make you feel part of a real football club, drawing you deeper into every aspect of the experience, even those you would never have imagined being able to experience firsthand. That's what truly sets it apart from other games: the level of immersion, the depth of the experience, and the genuine feeling that you're actually managing a football team.
FM27's New Tactical Features
Among the most interesting additions is the new system for making tactical adjustments. During a match, players can now make real-time changes to multiple instructions, adapting their game plan to the opposition and to what is unfolding on the pitch. It is a feature that brings Football Manager even closer to the complexity of the decisions a real-life manager has to make during a match. Alongside this comes a system designed to measure and better understand the effectiveness of tactical choices. This is particularly interesting because it allows players to look beyond the final score. Understanding how well a particular approach is working adds another layer of analysis, providing tools to assess the team's performances and make adjustments accordingly. It is another way of placing the strategic element at the heart of the experience, one of the series' greatest strengths since its inception.
A New Experience for Football Manager Players
Another change concerns the pace of the simulation itself. FM27 allows players to decide how frequently the game should pause processing to display updates and information. This offers greater freedom when managing time and makes it possible to customise the flow of a career according to personal preferences and how players want to experience each day. Once again, the idea is to give players greater control over their experience, without forcing them to follow a predetermined pace. There are also improvements to the presentation of matches, with a revamped matchday visual experience, alongside the return of several features and familiar behaviours for long-time players. This is far from a minor detail for a series that has built a community deeply attached to its habits over the years, from the little rituals that accompany every career to those mechanics that, while not necessarily decisive for the final result, help make the Football Manager experience so distinctive.
And perhaps this is the most interesting thing about FM27. On the one hand, there is the need to renew a product that, year after year, must find new ways to surprise a community that knows every detail of the game. On the other, there is the awareness that Football Manager does not need to completely reinvent itself to remain compelling. Its strength lies in the opportunity to build a personal story, made up of unexpected promotions, signings who become legends, painful sackings and season finales that seem designed to test the patience of anyone in the dugout. Because, ultimately, the beauty of Football Manager is that no two careers are ever the same. There is always a team to rebuild, a young player to bring through, an opponent to study and a target that, at least on paper, seems within reach. And even when we know perfectly well how difficult it might be to achieve it, we keep believing. Just like at the start of every new season.
