Bergamo is Atalanta and Atalanta is Bergamo We've been at the New Balance Arena for Atalanta-Napoli

Bergamo is Atalanta and Atalanta is Bergamo. You don’t need to arrive at the New Balance Arena, the home stadium of La Dea, to understand that. Just enter the city and you’ll come across the Magazzini Generali Bergamaschi. On one side of the building, a mural has been created to celebrate the club’s recent history through portraits of two key figures. One is dedicated to Josip Iličić, a phenomenal player who, during the Covid era, went through a personal ordeal that kept him off the pitch, ultimately strengthening his bond with the fans. The second is Gian Piero Gasperini, the coach who masterminded Atalanta’s rise from a small provincial club to one of Serie A’s benchmark teams, culminating in their Europa League victory in 2024.

Why is it called New Balance Arena?

After nine years in charge of the club, Gasperini left Atalanta at the end of last season, but that wasn’t the only change for the 2025/26 campaign. Alongside a new head coach came a new technical sponsor: New Balance. More than just a sponsor, a partner tasked with shaping a new aesthetic identity through match kits capable of enhancing the city’s tradition and New Balance’s forward-looking vision. Strengthening this relationship even further, the American brand secured the stadium’s naming rights, which is why today Bergamo and Atalanta’s stadium is known worldwide as the New Balance Arena.

What was the previous name?

What was once known as the Stadio Atleti Azzurri d’Italia underwent major renovation works between 2019 and 2024. Part of the original 1924 structure was preserved, such as the painted ceiling of the main stand. Around it, a state-of-the-art, European-inspired facility was built, featuring 24,000 fully covered seats—every one of them filled during Sunday’s 2–1 comeback win over Napoli. In that match, the push from the Curva Pisani, whose structure is inspired by Borussia Dortmund’s Yellow Wall, played a crucial role. Just as crucial is the relationship New Balance is building with Bergamo and Atalanta, fully understanding that one cannot exist without the other.
