Coventry will give its fans Premier League season tickets for free A promise is a promise

Coventry are back in the Premier League. The team managed by Frank Lampard has secured mathematical promotion from the Championship with a 1-0 win away at Blackburn. The Sky Blues return to the top flight of English football after a 25-year absence, a period that began with relegation in the 2000/01 season and reached its lowest point in 2017 with a drop to League Two. From there, a slow but steady rebuild began, eventually bringing them back to the Premier League. For some fans, this also means the chance to watch their team for free.

Free Season Ticket Reward Explained

In 2023, Coventry City launched a bold season ticket promotion: fans could purchase a ticket at an increased price of £500, valid for both adults and children. The price would remain fixed for the following five years upon renewal. The campaign was also reintroduced in the next two seasons, with a slightly higher cost for new buyers, while renewals remained locked at £500.

The main incentive, however, was that if the team achieved promotion to the Premier League by the 2027/28 season, supporters who had purchased a season ticket and renewed it at least once would receive a free season ticket for the following Premier League campaign. Now that promotion has become a reality, Coventry chairman Doug King has confirmed the club intends to honour the promise. Although exact figures have not been officially released, the club had set a maximum limit of 5,000 eligible seats when the campaign was launched.

Promotion will also mark Coventry Building Society Arena’s debut in the Premier League, the stadium that replaced Highfield Road as Coventry’s home ground from 2005. Or at least, that was the management’s plan, but given the financial problems that threatened to drive the club into administration in 2007, Coventry has found itself playing home matches away from home in recent years: first at Northampton Town’s ground (2013/14) and then in Birmingham (from 2019 to 2021). Coventry only became the stadium’s owner in 2023; prior to that, it was forced to rent the stadium, first from the city council and then from Wasps RFC, Coventry’s rugby team.

With a capacity of over 30,000 seats and a rectangular layout, the stadium was originally designed with more ambitious features, including a retractable roof. However, the club’s relegation and England’s failure to secure the 2006 World Cup led several investors to withdraw, forcing a scaling back of the original project. Despite this, the stadium has become a modern and versatile venue, hosting a wide range of events from rugby to tennis, darts, and concerts. And now, finally, it will also host top-flight Premier League football.
