Lyon women's team has changed name and logo
A rebrand designed to create a new identity
May 19th, 2025
With 39 titles, including 8 editions of the Women's Champions League, Lyon is one of the most successful teams in the history of women's football. A substantial collection of accomplishments has prompted the French club to aim for further advancement and to establish itself as a prominent reference in the sport. As a result, they have chosen to forge a new identity. Starting with the name: Olympique Lyonnais Féminin will now be called OL Lyonnes. Michele Kang, the entrepreneur behind the women's team, is eager for a rebranding effort aimed at establishing a distinct and original identity that is separate from the men's team, while still acknowledging the recent legacy of the women's team. "A new story, the same legend," as the new motto says.
As mentioned, the changes do not stop at the name. Starting from next season, Lyonnes unveiled a new logo too, completely different from that of the men's club. The historic emblem featured a gold silhouette of a lion's body inside the O of OL, which has now been transformed into the fierce head of a lioness, symbolizing courage, dynamism, and the team's aspirations. The design features gentle curves and is placed within a traditional shield, where the inscription OL Lyonnes completes the curve. An additional detail embellishes the logo, as in addition to the club's traditional colors, red and blue, a third color has been added: yellow.
The only point of contact with the men's team will be the stadium, but even this represents a novelty. Starting from the 2025/26 season, Lyonnes will play all home games at the Groupama Stadium, becoming the first women's team to permanently use the same stadium as the men's team. The stadium, for Lyonnes' matches, will be decorated with the new colors of the logo. The ambition for success does not end there, as the long-term vision also includes the construction of a new training center, the first one entirely dedicated to women's football. The project will be financed by Kang, and while the estimated costs have not been disclosed, Kang herself has stated: "It won't be cheap. It will be better than many training centers for men's teams. It is essential to create a unique environment where champions can thrive."
