Which cities will host the 2030 Winter Olympics? Everything you need to know
The curtain is about to fall on the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games. After two weeks of competition, the closing ceremony scheduled at the Arena di Verona will mark the final chapter of the event before the spotlight shifts once again from March 6 to 15 for the Winter Paralympic Games. This edition of the Games, in addition to reaffirming the leading role of fashion brands, introduced the so-called concept of widespread Olympics — a system in which competitions take place across multiple venues spread throughout the same country. A format that will also be adopted for the next Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles 2028 as well as for the next edition of the Winter Olympics.
French Alps 2030
The 2030 edition of the Winter Olympic Games will be held in France and will officially be known as French Alps 2030. The Games will run from February 1 to 17, 2030, marking the fourth time France has hosted the Winter Olympics after Chamonix-Mont-Blanc 1924, Grenoble 1968, and Albertville 1992. The decision not to associate this edition with a single city is directly linked to the fact that the 2030 Games will also embrace a multi-venue, country-wide structure.
Where will the competitions of the 2030 Winter Olympic Games take place?
In official terms, the competition areas have been defined as clusters. In Haute-Savoie, for instance, cross-country skiing events will take place in La Clusaz, while biathlon will be hosted in Le Grand-Bornand. In Briançon, snowboard and freestyle skiing competitions will be held, while the department of Savoie will stage alpine skiing, ski jumping, and all sliding sports (luge, skeleton, and bobsleigh). The city of Nice will also play a key role, hosting most of the ice sports — short track, figure skating, hockey, and curling — as well as the closing ceremony. The location of the opening ceremony has not yet been decided. Finally, there will be five different Olympic Villages: Saint-Jean-de-Sixt, Bozel, La Plagne, Briançon, and Nice.
Which events will Turin host?
An Italian venue will also be involved in the organization of the 2030 Winter Olympic Games: Turin. The Piedmont capital has been selected to host the speed skating events. To avoid building a new facility in France, the Oval Lingotto — the same venue used during the 2006 Winter Olympic Games — will be utilized. Turin had initially been included in the organizational bid for the 2026 Games, but in 2018 the city administration decided to withdraw from the project due to its marginal role — only two disciplines would have been held there — and uncertain organizational costs expected to rise. In 2034, the Winter Olympic Games will return to the United States, in Salt Lake City.
